VocabularyMean: The averaged amount of numbers of a sequence
Median: The number in the middle of a sequence of numbers, when organized from least to greatest Mode: The number that appears the most in a sequence of numbers Range: The largest number in a sequence minus to smallest number in the sequence. This will give us our range. |
Today's Target: Understand what mean, median, and mode are, and be able to recognize them.

The Importance of these Terms
Mean
The mean is the average of all numbers. To find the average, you add each of the numbers together, then divide by the total number of numbers used.
To find the mean of: 14, 5, 20, 16, 19, 8, 22
|
Practice
Find the Mean of these number sequences
- Step 1: Add all the numbers together
- Step 2: Divide the total by the amount of numbers used
- 40, 8, 3
- 23, 12, 7, 10
- 18, 13, 21, 12, 11
- 3, 5,10, 5, 21, 4, 1
Median
"A good way to remember what median is, think middle"
The median is the middlemost number in an arranged sequence. If you do not have a proper median, you add both "middle" numbers together, then divide by 2.
To find the Median of: 14, 5, 20, 16, 19, 8, 22
16 is our Median |
Practice
Find the Medians in the below number sequences
- Step 1: Organize all numbers in ascending order
- Step 2: Find the middlemost number, that is the median
- Step 3: If you have 2 "middlemost" numbers, add them together, then divide by 2
- 12, 5, 2, 15, 8
- 23, 44, 21,12, 13
- 42, 21,15, 1, 5, 14, 10
- 5, 10, 13, 8, 3, 6
Mode
"A good way to remember Mode is think of the first 2 letters: MO, for Most Often."
Mode is the number that appears the most in a sequence of numbers. Mode can be the easiest to figure out because you are trying to see what number appears most often.
To find the Mode of: 5, 10, 4, 10, 4, 13, 4
|
Practice
Find the Modes in the below number sequences
- Step 1: Organize all numbers in ascending order for clarity
- Step 2: Find the number that appears most often
- 10, 3, 5, 10, 3, 3, 8, 3, 10
- 17, 13, 8, 5, 13, 8, 13, 13
- 4, 1, 6, 8, 2, 2, 1, 2
- 10, 12, 5, 15, 12, 21, 12,
Range
The range of a number sequence is the difference of the highest number and the smallest number. The tricky part for this is making sure you don't rush on the first big number you find for the range.
To find the Range of: 14, 5, 20, 16, 19, 8, 22

Practice
Find the Range in the below number sequences
- Step 1: Find the largest number

- Step 3: Find the difference between the two
- 12, 5, 2, 15, 8
- 23, 44, 21,12, 13
- 42, 21,15, 1, 5, 14, 10
