Concrete Poems
Concrete poems are fun, creative, styles of poetry. They are otherwise known as shape poetry because they form a unique shape, usually depending on the topic of the poem. The visual appearance of the poem is used to enhance and add depth to the poem in addition to the language.
Concrete poems can be uniquely made through design and structure. The important part about concrete poems is playing with the words you are using. Feel comfortable moving words around or having rough drafts with concrete poems, as the visual is just as important as the language used. |

Blackout Poetry
Blackout poetry is unique. You take words from a newspaper or an old book (get permission from a parent first) and begin blacking out sections and leave few words behind. The words you do not black out become their own poem. Blackout Poetry forces you to use words you would normally not use.
While some blackout poetry leaves only the words on a page of black, some also incorporate a unique visual as well, similar to our concrete poems. |

Create your own Blackout
Using either an old newspaper clipping or one of the provided quick clips, create your own blackout poem. I do recommend using an old newspaper for this, but if you do not have one use one of the provided fake newspaper articles.

- Plan ahead. Select words you like by putting a box around the word. Try to make your poem flow with the words you choose.
- After you have chosen as many words as you need, black out the rest.
