"Decimal math needs an extra step, but otherwise uses the same steps you already know."
Decimal Math
Decimal math is very important. It comes in handy when working with money, finding tax or discounts, or calculating small numbers with the metric system. However, each of the big math operations treat decimals a little differently. Today we are reviewing each of them.

Today's Target: Understand the steps of adding/subtracting/multiplying and dividing with decimal numbers.

Addition and Subtraction
Multiplication
When multiplying numbers with decimals, you will use long multiplication first and ignore the decimal. These numbers do not have to be lined up. After you have solved with long multiplication, follow these extra steps.
you will need to count the number of decimal spaces both original numbers had, and then the combined amount is the number of decimal spaces for the answer. |
Division
When dividing numbers that have decimals, we will use long division, as normal, but with a few extra steps.
